ørgen Leth, director of A Sunday in Hell

One of the films we can’t wait to see is The Commentator, directed by Bicycle Film Festival’s founding director Brendt Barbur. The Commentator revisits legendary filmmaker Jørgen Leth’s 1976 cycling masterpiece, A Sunday In Hell. Leth’s documentary about the Paris-Roubaix one-day race followed the Spring Classic across the cobbled French countryside. The Commentator will retrace those steps alongside Leth as he announces the 2012 Paris-Roubaix for television, and will capture the race from the perspectives of the staff, fans and athletes.

A diverse team of cinematic and musical heavyweights is coming together to celebrate cycling and honor the man who helped popularize the Paris-Roubaix. The world-class crew of photographers and filmmakers includes famed documentarian Albert Maysles (Grey Gardens, Gimme Shelter, Muhammad and Larry), cycling and surf luminaries Brian Vernor and Patrick Trefz, former Colors Magazine creative director and photographer Stefan Ruiz, and producer Laura Coxson of Maysels Films. The iconic New York band Blonde Redhead is creating the original score.

Leth memorably screened A Sunday in Hell at a sold out show for the first Bicycle Film Festival in 2001, over a decade ago. This year, the BFF comes full circle by screening The Commentator. Fittingly, almost everyone on the crew has participated in the festival over the years.

The Commentator is currently being funded on Kickstarter. Visit the Kickstarter page to view the trailer, and to help this film get made. You’ll get some cool stuff in return, like books, DVDs, limited edition Blonde Redhead-designed screen print posters, private screenings and more!
