Chatting away the evening with San Diego’s fun, smart, talented (and, can I say, highly attractive?) creative community is a pretty fantastic way to cap off a weekend, especially when that chatting is done over pizza, drinks and project proposals. On Sunday evening, Urbanist + 3rdSpace and more than 80 friends took over the windowed front space of Urbn Coal Fired Pizza & Bar, which generously donated what seemed like an endless supply of perfect pizza to our casual Pizza Parlay.
The group read through nine proposals, and ultimately voted to grant A Trolley Show the $830 kitty and free, three-month membership to 3rdSpace. This video series by Rowlberto Productions produces and films band performances on the trolley in order to promote public transportation and local music. The impromptu performances started as a guerilla web series, and are now sanctioned by the MTS, which is happy to have them onboard. They are 15 episodes in, and those who haven’t been lucky enough to catch the performances live as passengers can still watch them online. They already have the cash in hand, and will immediately put it to use for equipment and a web overhaul.

Second and third place proposals do not go unrewarded; both receive a free, one-month membership to 3rdSpace. Amanda Toombs’ “Hobo, Not Boho” is a pilot social enterprise working to provide supplies and ideally, space, to homeless artists and empower them to utilize their creativity as a means to overcome poverty and social exclusion. North Park gallery and studio space Agitprop is seeking funding to renovate and double its exhibition space, as a number of successful, dynamic events have proved it indispensable to the community. While these two projects didn’t receive funding at the Parlay, we are confident they will secure funding elsewhere. We hope that by bringing attention to these and other great Parlay projects, we might help someone with resources notice these works.
While we don’t have details to share yet about the May pizza sponsor, we can say that the next Pizza Parlay will be back at the 3rdSpace home base on Sunday, May 27th, from 5 to 7pm. So, get those creative proposals ready! I want to see them on Monday, May 21st. All the info you need for submission is here. Consider this your call for entries deadline.

Introducing the proposers.
Jason Paul Reimer (seated, plaid) proposed a photo essay to capture the people and places of Cuba at this moment of transition into a new reality. He is hoping to visit Cuba on an officially-sanctioned trip this June. Robert Knauf (standing, pink) is part of Rowlberto Productions.
