“When they call Claire Huxtable, pick up your order at the window.” That is what they’ll tell you (with a straight face) when you place an order at San Diego’s newest Ale House and Sausage Grill, Regal Beagle. Your ticket could also be Alf or if you’re lucky Kelly Kapowski…
Newly opened in Mission Hills, you can probably guess Regal Beagle’s specialty: quality and a wide variety of beer and sausage. Check out a list of the 24 beers on tap at Tap Hunter
I met co-owner Matt Guilbert who was behind the bar on Friday night. He told me that their gourmet sausage comes from T&H Prime Meats and Sausage in San Marcos. They have to drive up there on pick up days and they can only serve what T&H is carrying but they think (and I agree after tasting it) that it’s worth the trouble. The beers on tap are a mix of local and California microbrews and other specialty brews from all over.
In case you are wondering where you have heard this pub name before, Regal Beagle is the name of the bar in Three’s Company but there is no obvious homage to Janet, Chrissy or Jack. They do have a few things that make it more fun than your average bar though: a designated mustard station, a closet full of games (the couple next to us was playing Connect Four and girls on the other side of us were playing Jenga), and a big beer wheel behind the bar to spin in case you just can’t decide what to drink.
Everything we had was pretty affordable. I ordered the jalapeño and cheddar sausage (with onions and extra cheese of course) and my husband got the Linguiça, a traditional Portuguese sausage with garlic. I also got the beer flight of the night, which was bigger than I thought it was going to be and I enjoyed it, especially the New English Brewers Brown.
The food is great and there is a beer there for everyone but the best part about the Regal Beagle is that everyone there seemed to already be friends with, or about to become best friends with, the guys behind the bar. They are very knowledgeable and friendly and want you to have fun. So, try it out, I bet you will have a good time.
