Prostitutes and gamblers once roamed this 16-block former red light district, including mustachioed saloon-keeper Wyatt Earp. Those raucous pool halls and brothels are long gone, but many of the Gaslamp’s grand Victorian-era buildings are still around, sharing street space with contemporary lofts, restaurants, bars, clubs, boutiques, and galleries. After dark, it’s the city’s busiest party scene, packed with tourists and suburbanites in town for a big night out. Hipsters are a minority, but even they've managed to ferret out a few cool downtown spots.
