Hillcrest is a hub of uptown action and an unofficial headquarters for San Diego’s LGBT community. The pedestrian-friendly neighborhood is packed with plenty of gay and straight nightlife options, plus top-notch dining, shopping, and people watching. West of Hillcrest is Mission Hills, an old enclave lined with lovingly preserved architectural beauties. The atmosphere is decidedly more demure than vibrant Hillcrest, but the stately homes and gardens set back behind manicured lawns are worth a slow-down and stare.
